My lab at the Institute of Molecular Biology (IMB), Academia Sinica, focuses on the rapid evolution of essential genes and chromosome structures. We are particularly interested in the paradox of how genes and chromosomal features critical for survival and reproduction, typically expected to be evolutionarily conserved, can instead evolve rapidly under strong positive selection. To investigate this, we integrate genetics, genomics, and cytology to uncover the causes and consequences of this phenomenon.

We are seeking 1 postdoctoral researcher to conduct and lead research projects. Candidates will earn authorship on resulting publications and will be strongly encouraged to develop and lead independent projects. Successful candidates will have opportunities to attend international conferences and visit collaborator labs in US or Canada. I’m strongly committed to supporting career development and mentorship for all team members.

Responsibilities:

Lead and contribute to research projects, including international collaborations
Draft and revise manuscripts for publication; assist in grant writing
Develop and pursue independent research directions
Mentor junior lab members
Present data at lab meetings and provide regular project updates
Maintain weekly progress reports on experiments and analysis

Responsibilities for postdoctoral fellow:
• Leading independent research, design and carrying out well controlled, reproducible experiments which address well-developed hypotheses.
• Work closely with other team members and external collaborators.
• Present progress internally and externally through conferences.
• Writing manuscripts and assisting with grant applications.

Responsibilities for research assistant:
• Collaborating with team members to design and establish various biochemical assays, molecular biological techniques, mouse colony management and assist mouse-based experimental techniques when needed.
• Overseeing day-to-day lab operations, provide administrative support, maintenance of safety standards, restock and purchasing, databases and standard operating procedures, and general organization of the lab.

The Cheung Lab, relocating from the Francis Crick Institute (London, UK) to the Genomics Research Center (GRC), Academia Sinica (Taipei) in August 2025, is seeking highly motivated and creative researchers to join our team. In GRC, you will be joining a group of enthusiastic postdocs and PhD students with diverse expertise in cancer research and metabolism and will have access to state-of-the-art approaches and resources in GRC as well as other AS institutes.

Our goal is to understand how cancer cells communicate with their immediate microenvironment as well as distal host tissues and organs to regulate metabolic stress and redox homeostasis in tumours to facilitate growth and metastasis, focusing on pancreatic cancer (Cheung et al. PNAS 2024, Cheung and Vousden Nat Rev Cancer 2022, Cheung et al. Cancer Cell 2020, Cheung et al. Genes Dev 2016, Cheung et al. Developmental Cell 2013). We employ functional genomics, metabolomics, ex vivo organoid models, animal models of cancer, and single cell sequencing to uncover new mechanisms of disease and therapeutic targets. Our work seeks to reveal novel strategies that target both cancer cells and host tissues, offering a more refined, systemic approach to cancer treatment.

The research interest in our lab is to study the post-transcriptional gene regulation with the approaches of genomics and molecular biology. The projects will focus on RNA splicing, translation and stability. Using human cell lines as our major model system, and combining computational biology, molecular biology and next-generation sequencing, we aim to understand how sequence variations contribute to post-transcriptional regulation in diseases.

Research on Optimization of Deep Learning Model Inference and Training

The Computer Systems Laboratory - Machine Learning Systems team focuses on research areas including parallel and distributed computing, compilers, and computer architecture. We aim to leverage computer system technologies to accelerate the inference and training of deep learning models and develop optimizations for next-generation AI models. Our research emphasizes the following:

1. AI Model Compression and Optimization
Model compression techniques (e.g., pruning and quantization) reduce the size and computational demands of AI models, which are crucial for resource-constrained platforms such as embedded systems and memory-limited AI accelerators. We aim to explore:
* AI compiler: deployment methods for compressed models across servers, edge devices, and heterogeneous systems.
* High performance computing: efficient execution of compressed models on processors with advanced AI extensions, e.g., Intel AVX512, ARM SVE, RISC-V RVV, and tensor-level accelerations on GPUs and NPUs.

2. AI Accelerator Design
We aim to design AI accelerators for accelerating AI model inference, focusing on software and hardware co-design and co-optimization.

3. Optimization of AI Model Inference in Heterogeneous Environments
Computer architectures are evolving toward heterogeneous multi-processor designs (e.g., CPUs + GPUs + AI accelerators). Integrating heterogeneous processors to execute complex models (e.g., hybrid models, multi-models, and multi-task models) with high computational efficiency poses a critical challenge. We aim to explore:
* Efficient scheduling algorithms.
* Parallel algorithms for the three dimensions: data parallelism, model parallelism, and tensor parallelism.
