Dr. Lee-Feng Chien has long been focusing on the development of software technology and innovation. From 2005 to 2020, he served as the first managing director of Google Taiwan and successfully transformed it into the largest R&D center in Asia. He oversaw the global development of Chinese search technology and held engineering leadership roles for products including Chrome OS. Post-retirement in 2020, Dr. Chien has been actively engaged in Taiwan's entrepreneurial ecosystem, serving on the boards of AI startups such as Appier and iKala. Notably, Appier was successfully listed in Japan and became Taiwan’s first AI unicorn. He also co-founded an angel fund, and mentors numerous startups, as well as serving as a member of the Executive Yuan's Economic Development Committee.
Dr. Chien is also deeply involved in academia. Between 1993 and 2005, he was a research fellow at the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, while concurrently teaching at the Department of Information Management at National Taiwan University from 2001 to 2005. As a pioneer in Chinese natural language processing and AI, he obtained his Ph.D. in 1991 for his research on Chinese language models and, in collaboration with Professor Lin-Shan Lee, developed the world's first Chinese speech recognition system in 1993. His research on Chinese information retrieval earned him the inaugural K. T. Li Young Research Award in 1997.

Once merely calculators, computers have evolved into sophisticated "electronic brains" capable of human-like language, learning, and processing billions of written works. If 2023 marked the birth of generative AI, then 2024 could be the year of human-AI collaboration. The relationship between humans and machines is shifting from auxiliary to collaborative, with AI enhancing our abilities in various tasks, including content creation, coding, translation, marketing, and even academic assignments. However, the potential for inaccuracies, biases, latency, and security risks in AI applications cannot be ignored.

Imagine a future where humans learn exponentially faster with the aid of machines. Yet, as AI continues to advance at an unprecedented pace, human society is poised for significant disruption. In this talk, we will explore the profound impact of generative AI, delve into the future of AI technology, and discuss the challenges and opportunities facing Taiwan. We will also address the potential risks associated with AI and how individuals and organizations can effectively harness AI as a co-pilot while mitigating these risks.
