The Regulations for Presidential Searches for Academia Sinica

  • In order to elect the President of Academia Sinica (hereafter referred to as AS), the Council of AS enacted these Regulations in accordance with Article 3 and Article 12 of the Organization Act of Academia Sinica.
  • When the President of the AS reaches the end of his (her) first term but is unwilling to resume a second term, or when he (she) reaches the end of the second term, one year before the term expires; or when the President resigns or the post becomes vacant, the Council of the AS should organize a Presidential Search Committee to search for candidates
    for the Presidency.
  • The Presidential Search Committee is set to have 9 members, 3 members each for the three divisions of AS: Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Life Sciences; and Humanities and Social Sciences. Among the 3 members for each division, two are elected Council Members and one is ex officio Member.
  • Presidential Search Committee members are elected from the Council Members. Each Council Member should choose 3 candidates from the list of names that belongs to his (her) own division, two being elected Council Members and one being ex officio Member. When Search Committee members resign or the post becomes vacant, it is necessary to repeat the election process and fill the vacancy accordingly.
  • Search Committee members select a convener when they meet.
  • Besides accepting the recommendations of those who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, outstanding academic status, broad academic viewpoint, high administrative ability, and generous spirit, the Search Committee can also search actively for persons with the appropriate talents to become candidates for the Presidency of the AS.
    If a Search Committee member is recommended and agrees to become a candidate for the Presidency of the AS, he (she) should resign from the Search Committee.
  • In order to understand the research environment and needs of the AS, the Search Committee can hold meetings with staffs and researchers of the AS.
  • Within 6 months of its organization, the Search Committee should present a list of at least 4 Presidential candidates to the Council of the AS for voting. When voting for the President of the AS, Council Members should select a chairperson to handle the voting procedures.
  • The administrative work of the Search Committee is supported by the Secretariat Office of the General Administrative Office.
  • These Regulations shall take effect as of the date of their promulgation.

(These Regulations are drafted in both Chinese and English. If there is any inconsistency between the two, the Chinese version shall prevail.)
