Newly elected Academicians and Honorary Academicians were announced by President James C. Liao and Conveners for the Convocation of Academicians in the press conference after the closing of the Convocation on July 7. This year, a total of 19 new Academicians and 3 Honorary Academicians were elected.
Academician Kenneth K. Wu, spokesman of the Convocation of Academicians, said the election was a prudent and rigorous process, which took many rounds of detailed discussion and review over a few days. The subject of Academicians’ nationality will be handled with the utmost respect towards the candidates and in compliance with the law.
Academician Wu further pointed out that newly elected Academicians announced today are all with ROC citizenship. A total of 5 candidates have successfully passed the election process but their nationalities are to be confirmed. They include 1 in the Division of Life Sciences, 2 in the Division of Engineering Sciences, and 2 in the Division of Humanities and Social Sciences. With respect to nationality law, Academia Sinica is not in charge of rendering the final determination. The nationalities of the elected candidates have to be confirmed to be lawful before their election can be announced and the certificates conferred.
