Dr Kuan-Jen Chen, Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS)

Dr. Kuan-Jen Chen, Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, has recently been elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (FRHistS) in recognition of his contributions to historical scholarship. Dr Chen is amongst the few Taiwanese historians to receive this distinction and is the fourth Taiwanese scholar elected as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Previous Taiwanese Fellows include Academician Fan-Sen Wang of Academia Sinica, Professor Jeng-Guo Chen of the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica, and Professor Su-Hsien Yang of the Department of History at National Taiwan University.

Founded in 1868, the Royal Historical Society is the most prestigious historical associations in the United Kingdom, dedicated to the promotion of historical research, academic publications, and international scholarly exchange. Fellowship is awarded through nomination and Council review to scholars who have made original contributions to historical scholarship.

Dr. Chen received his PhD in History from the University of Cambridge. His research focuses on Cold War history, international history, and American foreign policy. In recent years, he has focused particularly on the American military advisory system in Taiwan during the early Cold War, US military personnel stationed in Taiwan, and the formation of the East Asian security order. He is the author of Charting America’s Cold War Waters in East Asia (Cold War Waters in Chinese translation). He has also published articles in Cold War History, The Journal of Military History, The Journal of American-East Asian Relations, Cold War International History Studies, Bulletin of Academia Historica, and Chikaki ni Arite, among other domestic and international academic journals.
