Academician Chien-Jen Chen Awarded the 2026 APASL Okuda-Omata Distinguished Award

Date: 2026-04-10

Academician Chien-Jen Chen has been honored the 2026 Okuda-Omata Distinguished Award by the Asian Pacific Association for the Study of the Liver (APASL) in recognition of his longstanding and outstanding contributions to liver disease research. This honor also highlights Taiwan’s significant role in the global hepatology community. The award will be presented on April 23, 2026, in Istanbul, Turkey.

As an internationally renowned epidemiologist, Academician Chen has devoted his career to the study of viral hepatitis and liver cancer. His pioneering work has established critical scientific evidence on the causal relationship between hepatitis B virus infection and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as on disease natural history and risk factor analysis. In addition, he has played a pivotal role in public health policymaking, promoting the translation of research findings into practical applications. His contributions to vaccination strategies and hepatitis screening and treatment systems have been particularly impactful, making him one of the few medical scientists with distinguished achievements spanning both scientific research and public governance.

The Okuda-Omata Distinguished Award, established by APASL, is one of the most prestigious international honors in hepatology. It recognizes leading scholars who have made original scientific breakthroughs and demonstrated global academic leadership with profound impact. Past recipients are internationally recognized leaders in liver disease research, underscoring the award’s status as one of the highest distinctions in the field.
