Lecture Synopsis:

In this lecture, Dr. Martinis will review the progress of superconducting qubits since the experimental realization of macroscopic quantum phenomena in the 1980s, and highlight the critical technological bottleneck currently faced by the field, the challenge of scaling up quantum devices constrained by conventional wiring architectures. He will argue that achieving practical, large-scale quantum computing requires a paradigm shift toward industrial-level semiconductor fabrication, advanced cryogenic integrated circuits, and 3D integration, moving quantum technology decisively from the laboratory to the fabrication facility.

About the Lecturer:

John Martinis has researched superconducting qubits since the mid 1980’s. From 2014 to 2020 he worked at Google to build a useful quantum computer, culminating in a quantum supremacy experiment in 2019. He was awarded the London Prize in 2014 and the John Stewart Bell prize in 2021. In 2023 he co-founded the startup Qolab to build a useful quantum computer. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2025.
