The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) announced the election of one Academia Sinica Academician among its 2021 list of 58 new members in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Academician Pui-Yan Kwok, Director of the Institute of Biomedical Science, Academia Sinica, is elected as TWAS fellow in Medical and Health Sciences incl. Neurosciences.
Academician Pui-Yan Kwok was honored as an innovator in genomic technologies who invented homogeneous genotyping assays and single-molecule genome mapping; key contributor to large-scale genomic projects; leader in genome-wide association studies of common diseases; and pioneer in precision medicine. He currently leads the Taiwan Precision Medicine Initiative, a Consortium between Academia Sinica and 15 Partner Medical Centers across Taiwan that brings together the clinical and genetic profiles of 1 million participants for disease risk prediction and tailored health management for all. Academician Kwok is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and the Chen Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Human Genetics and Genome Research from the Human Genome Organization (HUGO).
TWAS now has more than 1,343 members. Fifty-eight new TWAS Fellows were elected into the membership in November 2021 and twenty new members are women – an unprecedented 34% of the new class. The main mission of the academy is to promote scientific excellence and capacity in the South for science-based sustainable development.
