Dr. Cheng-Wei Wu earned his Ph.D. from the Department of History at National Taiwan University. Before joining the Institute of Modern History, he served as a Foreign Researcher at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo and as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica.
His research focuses on the history of foreign relations during the Ming and Qing dynasties and cultural exchange in modern East Asia, with a particular interest in the influence of the Chinese state within the broader East Asian region. He believes that exploring these themes necessitates looking beyond traditional Chinese records. Benefiting from the global accessibility of historical materials over the past few decades, pursuing a more comprehensive history of East Asia has become a tangible reality rather than a distant dream.
