Dr. Chia-Yu Lien received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis, with additional training in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She joined the Institute of Sociology, Academia Sinica as an Assistant Research Fellow in January 2025. Before pursuing sociological research, she worked as a psychiatric nurse in Taiwan and the United States for nearly fifteen years.
Dr. Lien's research focuses on gig economy, reproductive labor, and elderly care, stemming from her experiences as a nurse and her academic training. Her dissertation examines the evolving care landscape through what she terms "gig nursing"—the restructuring of nursing home care driven by platform technologies that connect facilities with workers in the U.S.—investigating its distributions, organizations, and ramifications through ethnographic methods. Her future research will continue to focus on work and care while expanding beyond the U.S. to include Taiwan.
