Academician Bede Liu passed away in the United States on May 7, 2026, at the age of 92.
Academician Liu was an internationally renowned scholar in signal processing, video coding, digital watermarking, and multimedia technologies. He made seminal contributions to signal processing implementation, one-bit signal processing methods, the fundamental limits of signal processing accuracy, motion-compensated video coding, image content analysis, and multimedia data hiding. His research advanced both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of modern signal processing and multimedia systems.
Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn in 1960. He subsequently joined Bell Laboratories and, beginning in 1962, served on the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Princeton University for more than five decades. From 1994 to 1997, he served as Chair of the department. In addition, Dr. Liu played an active role in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), serving as President of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society in 1982 and as a member of the IEEE Board of Directors in 1984 and 1985.
Dr. Liu was elected a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, an IEEE Fellow, and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. His honors included the IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal, the IEEE Fourier Award for Signal Processing, the IEEE Signal Processing Society Award, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Mac Van Valkenburg Award. He was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in 2006.
