Date: 2024-06-20

The 2024 Tang Prize in Sinology is awarded to Academician Hsu Cho-yun for his exceptional contributions to the field of Sinology.

Dr. Hsu 's illustrious academic career has been distinguished by his holistic approach to the study of ancient Chinese history, seamlessly integrating an exploration of cultural and intellectual exchanges between China and the world. Notable examples include his exploration of the Huaxia consciousness among kinship groups in his monograph Western Chou Civilization, the central/local and  political/social bureaucratic systems in Qiugu Bian (Discovering Antiquity) , and the intensive rural/commercial market economy in Han Agriculture. These discourses form what he calls “the three matrixes of Chinese culture.” Dr. Hsu specializes in particular topics of the Zhou, Qin, and Han periods, achieving unique insights that contribute to a comprehensive interpretation of the early history of China.

Dr. Hsu is an Academia Sinica Academician (1980), Honorary Member of Phi Beta Kappa (1986), and Honorary Doctorate of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Literature (2008). He has also received numerous honors, including the AAS Award for Distinguished Contributions for Asian Studies (2004).

The Tang Prize was established in December 2012. It consists of four award categories: Sustainable Development, Biopharmaceutical Science, Sinology, and Rule of Law. The prizes are awarded every two years to encourage professionals in these fields to influence and made substantive contributions to the world.
