Two Young Economists from Taiwan Invited to 2025 Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences

Date: 2025-08-18

The 8th Lindau Nobel Meeting in Economic Sciences will take place from August 26 to 30, 2025, in Lindau, Germany. Approximately 20 Nobel Laureates in Economic Sciences and nearly 300 young researchers from 55 countries are expected to participate. Two young economists from Taiwan—Dr. Tsung-Hsien Li, Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica, and Dr. Fei Chi Liang, Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at National Chengchi University—have been invited to attend.

The Economic Sciences Meeting is held every three years. Selection for the Meeting is highly competitive. This year, most participants are under the age of 30, and 44% are women. Key topics of this year’s meeting include the stability of financial systems, institutional development and competition among nations, climate policy and international cooperation. The “Open Exchanges,” a session intended to boost free expression and open dialogue among young scholars, will be introduced for the first time in the Economic Sciences Meeting.

Li: Grounding Research on Consumer Credit Markets in Nobel-Winning Theories

Tsung-Hsien Li, Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Economics, Academia Sinica, has long focused on the study of consumer credit markets—an area closely related to this year’s conference theme on "The Fragility of Financial Systems." The foundational theories underpinning his research on consumer credit markets—particularly issues related to asymmetric information and contract design—draw on the influential work of Nobel Laureates Douglas Diamond, Philip Dybvig, and Bengt Holmström. Diamond and Dybvig’s insights into self-fulfilling bank runs have profoundly shaped deposit insurance and financial stability policies. This serves as a key theoretical basis for Li’s exploration of credit market fragility. Meanwhile, Holmström’s groundbreaking contributions to contract theory provide Li with a critical analytical framework for examining credit markets under asymmetric information.

Li remarked, “This is truly a rare and valuable opportunity to engage face-to-face with leading scholars from around the world. I look forward to gaining insightful feedback and inspiration through interactions with Nobel Laureates and international peers.” He also plans to participate in informal events such as the “Science Walks” to better understand how senior scholars plan their research paths and academic careers.

Liang: Presenting Research at the Meeting and Engaging with International Scholars on AI and the Global Economy

Assistant Professor Fei Chi Liang from the Department of Economics at National Chengchi University shared that she was deeply inspired by Nobel Laureate Paul Romer’s work on the “endogenous growth model,” which led her to pursue research in public finance and macroeconomic theory. She was selected as one of 72 young scholars to present her research at the Meeting. “It is incredibly meaningful to participate in the Lindau Meeting early in my academic career and to have the opportunity to engage directly with Nobel Laureates who have made significant contributions to economics.” said Professor Liang. “I am deeply grateful for the recognition and will remain committed to producing high-quality research.”

In addition to interactions with distinguished scholars, Liang is also eager to exchange ideas with young economists from around the world on the evolving role of economist in the age of artificial intelligence, as well as recent U.S. tariff policies and their implications for the global economy.

Guided by the core values of "Educate, Inspire, Connect," the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings have served as a unique forum for Nobel Laureates and promising young scientists for over 70 years. Since 2017, Academia Sinica has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lindau Council and the Lindau Foundation, continuously recommending outstanding young scholars to participate.
