Academician Biing-Hwang (Fred) Juang has been awarded the 2026 IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), in recognition of his foundational contributions to the fields of speech coding and speech recognition. The award ceremony will be held on April 24, 2026, in New York City, USA.
Dr. Juang’s research expertise spans speech and signal processing, communication science, and human–computer interaction. He has made seminal contributions to speech signal processing and coding technologies. His pioneering work on hidden Markov modeling has had a profound impact on speech recognition and communications security. In addition, his research in machine learning has laid important groundwork for the development of artificial intelligence.
Dr. Juang is currently the Motorola Foundation Chair Professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He was elected Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (2013), Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering (2004), Fellow of Bell Labs (1999), IEEE Fellow (1991), and Academician of Academia Sinica (2006). His honors also include the IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize (2022) and the J.L. Flanagan Medal (2014), among others.
The IEEE Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal is an international award established by IEEE to recognize individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the field of signal processing, encompassing theory, technology, and applications. Recipients of the medal are widely regarded as leading figures in the field.
