Regulations on Academia Sinica Fellowships for DoctoralStudents from Foreign Universities (TIGP-X Pilot Program)

Announced via International Affairs Document No. 1121600380 on May 15, 2023
Amendment Announced via International Affairs Document No. 1141600412 on May 23, 2025

  • Objective
    To promote international academic collaboration and the recruitment of international students, Academia Sinica (AS) encourages researchers to collaborate with foreign academic research institutes by supporting international doctoral students to conduct thesis research at AS, thus enriching the talent pool of doctoral students.
  • Eligibility Requirements
    • AS researchers at the level of Assistant Research Fellow or above may apply for the Program.
    • Selected students must obtain approval from their affiliated institutes/universities.
  • Application and Review Procedures
    • Eligible AS researchers (the Applicants) must submit the following documents to Academic Service and Management System, Academia Sinica:
      • A statement written by the Applicant;
      • The student’s research plan;
      • The student’s curriculum vitae (CV);
      • The CV of the student's advisor at their affiliated institute/university;
      • A letter of recommendation from the student’s advisor at their affiliated institute/university;
      • A letter of approval from the student’s affiliated institute/university.
    • Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. The Department of International Affairs (DIA), Academia Sinica will collect applications and submit them to the Central Academic Advisory Committee (CAAC) for review. The evaluation is primarily based on points, including the academic competitiveness of the student’s affiliated foreign institute, as well as the anticipated significance of the research and collaboration plan. A shortlist, together with review comments, will be submitted to the AS President for approval.
  • Time Limits for Collaborative Research
    • The project’s expected completion date is required in the application. For those projects without a specific completion date, the project’s term is tentatively set for one year and may be extended, if necessary.
    • The collaborative research at AS is required to range from three months to three years. Projects of six months or longer will be given priority.
  • Award
    Approved applications receive the following benefits:
    • AS will provide selected students with a round-trip, economy class air ticket between their home country and Taiwan.
    • The Applicant may apply for an overseas business trip when serving as co-advisor to the selected student. AS will provide a round-trip, economy class air ticket to and from Taiwan, as well as living and office expenses (handling fees, insurance fees) based on the Directions for the Overseas Travel Allowance Disbursement. Financial support will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
    • The awardees of the "Academia Sinica Fellowship International Doctoral Students" (Category I) will receive a monthly fellowship of NT$34,000 and NT$16,000 from AS and the Applicant, respectively. Should the Applicant anticipate difficulties in providing this level of support, the circumstances should be explained at the time of application.
    • The awardees of the "Academia Sinica International Doctoral Students" (Category II) shall be funded by the Applicant, with the amount of money being in accordance with the Guidelines for Academia Sinica Fellowship Payments.
  • Review of Research Achievements
    • Selected "Academia Sinica Fellowship International Doctoral Students" must submit a progress report every year during their research at AS. After approval by the co-advisors of both institutes (at AS and the affiliated foreign institute/university), the report will be collected by the DIA and sent to CAAC for review before the fellowship for the following year is released.
    • A final research report must be submitted to the DIA at least two weeks before students leave Taiwan following the completion of their thesis research.
  • Important Information
    • Applicants are responsible for mentoring and assessing the selected students’ research work during their stay at AS. If the students must leave Taiwan for more than two weeks for personal reasons, the fellowship will be suspended temporarily since their departure. The suspended portion of scholarship will be offered to the students after their return to Taiwan.
    • The intellectual property rights of the awardees’ research results at AS will be handled in accordance with the Regulations for Academia Sinica Scientific and Technological Research and Development Results.
    • Should an awardee be involved in a violation of academic ethics, his or her case will be processed according to the Code of Ethics for Academia Sinica Research Fellows and Research Specialists.
