- Purpose
The “Scholarly Monograph Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences” (below abbreviated as Monograph Award) has been established to implement the legal mandate of Academia Sinica to reward academic research, as well as to encourage scholars in the humanities and social sciences to publish monographs, conduct in-depth research on academic topics and make important contributions to scholarship. - Award Description
- Each year, a maximum of five monographs are awarded the Monograph Award by Academia Sinica. Scholars receiving the Monograph Award (below referred to as awardees) will obtain 600,000 New Taiwan Dollars and a medal.
- To acknowledge the research achievements of the awardee(s), Monograph Award medals will be conferred by Academia Sinica at a public ceremony. A short biography of the awardee(s) as well as the title and abstract of the awarded monograph will be publicized on the Academia Sinica webpage.
- Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for the Monograph Award must hold full-time positions at domestic academic research institutions or at public or private universities or colleges. Applicants must have been engaged in teaching or research in the humanities or social sciences for at least two full years.
Retirees meeting the aforementioned requirements are also eligible to apply.
In the case of monographs with multiple authors, at least one main author should meet the eligibility requirements. - Application Documents
- Works submitted for the Monograph Award shall be the first edition of scholarly monographs published within three years prior to the application year. (Acceptable works do not include textbooks, compiled and translated works, symposium papers and conference proceedings, reports of research achievements and scholarly monographs that have not yet undergone official review procedures.) Submitted monographs may be written in languages other than Chinese.
- Applicants should provide three copies of the monograph, their curriculum vitae, and a list of scholarly works published within five years of the application deadline.
- In the case of monographs with multiple authors, all authors should jointly apply for the Monograph Award. However, the total amount awarded to all applicants for the same monograph is restricted to the amount established in Article 2.1 of these Guidelines.
- How to Apply
Announcements will be made in early January of each year inviting applicants to submit their online applications to Academia Sinica between March 1 and March 31 of that year. Three paper copies of the monograph shall be submitted to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service. - Evaluation Procedures
- The President of Academia Sinica shall appoint one of the Vice Presidents as the convener and nine to thirteen members to form the Evaluation and Selection Committee.
- The Evaluation and Selection Committee will conduct preliminary, secondary, and final reviews of all applications based on the reviews of experts in related fields. The Committee will then draft a list of monographs receiving the Monograph Award.
In cases where an AS awardee or a non-AS awardee is found to be in violation of regulations of Code of Ethics for Academia Sinica Research Fellows and Research Specialists, the aforementioned regulations shall apply.
