Dr. Kuan-Jen Chen has been awarded first prize in the Cold War Essay Contest at the Virginia Military Institute

Date: 2025-02-07

Dr Kuan-Jen Chen’s work, entitled “Imperium in Imperio: G.I. Joe’s Jurisdiction in Early Cold War Taiwan,” has been awarded first prize in the Cold War Essay Contest, sponsored by the John A. Adams ’71 Center for Military History & Strategic Analysis at the Virginia Military Institute. The prize was announced in December 2024.

The Cold War Essay Contest, as described on its website, aims to promote “innovative scholarship on Cold War subjects.” The contest recognises the best unpublished papers in Cold War studies, including topics such as military history, diplomacy, the relationships between militaries and societies, and geopolitics.

Drawing on primary sources from the United States, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan, Dr Chen’s article explores the jurisdictional issues faced by American soldiers in Cold War Taiwan. It situates these issues within the context of American overseas military deployment, the Kuomintang’s relationship with the United States, the collective memory of national humiliation in modern China, and postcolonial Taiwanese politics and society.
