Dr. Chih-Hang Wu of the Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology Selected as EMBO Global Investigator

Date: 2024-12-13

On December 12, 2024, the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) announced that Dr. Chih-Hang Wu, an Assistant Research Fellow at the Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology has been  selected as EMBO Global Investigator.

Dr. Chih-Hang Wu’s lab focuses on understanding how plants use their innate immune systems to defend against invading pathogens. Many plant pathogens can cause diseases in economically important crops, posing significant challenges to global food security. The team is investigating the evolutionary history and molecular mechanisms of plant intracellular immune receptors. By extending this fundamental knowledge to translational research, they aim to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to combat diseases affecting agricultural crops worldwide.

Dr. Wu expressed profound gratitude and enthusiasm upon being selected as an EMBO Global Investigator, stating, “I am deeply honored to receive this prestigious recognition. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to my lab members, whose dedication and hard work over the past few years have been instrumental in advancing our research. I am equally grateful to my colleagues at the Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology and Academia Sinica, who have fostered a nurturing and collaborative environment that has allowed me to explore and pursue innovative research ideas. I also want to thank my international and domestic collaborators, whose complementary expertise has been invaluable to what we have been able to achieve.”

He highlighted the significance of this recognition, emphasizing the new opportunities it presents. “Joining the EMBO Global Investigator Network represents an exciting opportunity not only to showcase the cutting-edge research being conducted in Taiwan but also to foster new connections with research groups across Europe and beyond. I look forward to engaging with the broader scientific community, exchanging ideas, and building new collaborations that will further enrich our work,” he added.

EMBO is an organization of more than 2,000 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences in Europe and beyond. The major goals of the organization are to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work. The EMBO Global Investigator Network program,
launched in 2019, aims to support junior life scientists within their first six years of setting up their labs. Each year, EMBO selects promising group leaders as Global Investigators who receive financial funding for networking, collaboration, and career-enhancing training activities.
