Academician Chuan-Chiung Chang Has Passed Away

Academician Chuan-Chiung Chang passed away in Taipei on February 1, 2024. He was 96 years old.

Dr. Chang was an internationally renowned pharmacologist, specializing in neurotoxicology, neurophysiology, and pharmacology. His groundbreaking contributions included the use of electrophoresis to isolate α, β, and γ neurotoxins from cobra venom, aiming to investigate their mechanism of action on neuromuscular transmission and acetylcholine receptors.

After earning his Ph.D. from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tokyo, Dr. Chang taught at the Department and Graduate Institute of Pharmacology, College of Medicine, National Taiwan University, where he served as the Director from 1978 to 1984 and later became Professor Emeritus. In 1994, he became the founding editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomedical Science, contributing significantly to enhance its international academic visibility.

Dr. Chang received several prestigious awards, including the Ministry of Education Academic Award, National Science and Technology Council Outstanding Research Award, Hou Chin Tui Outstanding Honorary Award, and the Outstanding Scholar Award from the Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship. He also served as the President of the Pharmacological Society in Taiwan from 1992 to 1996. Dr. Chang was elected as anAcademia Sinica Academician in 1976.
