Professor Michael Rowlands, an internationally renowned archaeologist and anthropologist, will visit Taiwan as Academia Sinica Lecturer and deliver two lectures during his stay. The first lecture, entitled “Civilisation Recast: From Africa to Asia and Beyond.” will be given at Academia Sinica on April 16. His second lecture, entitled “Endangered Heritage: Restitution and Repair.” will be delivered at the National Taiwan University on the following day. Members of the media and the public are welcome to attend.
Professor Rowlands’ research interests include the theorization and conceptualization of cultural heritage and material culture. In his early career, Professor Rowlands conducted fieldwork research on the histories and development of postcolonial museums in West Africa. He later shifted his focus to anthropological research, and pioneered the study of material culture at the UCL. Professor Rowlands is one of the few scholars in the humanities whose researches cross the boundaries of disciplines and geographical regions. He is currently a Principal Investigator of Digitising Dogon Heritage with the support from the Major European Union Grant under Horizon 2020. As for his connections with Asia, Professor Rowlands has extensive experience in cooperating with anthropologists in Taiwan and has recently been doing fieldwork in China.
Professor Rowlands is currently Head of the UCL Centre for Research into the Dynamics of Civilisation (CREDOC), as well as Emeritus Professor of Anthropology and Honorary Professor of Archaeology, UCL. He was a Trustee of the Royal Anthropology Institute and served as Director of the World Archaeological Congress.
The Academia Sinica Lecture Series was established in 2009. Invitation to speak as an Academia Sinica Lecturer is the highest honor of Academia Sinica. The honor is bestowed on Nobel Laureates and scholars of same caliber from across the world.
