On September 12, Academia Sinica announced the winners of the first Fellowship for Doctoral Students in Humanities and Social Sciences. Sixteen outstanding Ph.D. students from four universities across Taiwan were selected after a rigorous review process. The scholarship, ranging from NT$40,000 to NT$50,000 per month, offers recipients up to five years of financial support and access to Academia Sinica's academic resources. This is the first national scholarship program in Taiwan specifically for the humanities and social sciences, aimed at reducing financial pressure on students and fostering academic talent.
Dr. Miaw-Fen Lu, Deputy Executive Secretary of the Central Academic Advisory Committee, emphasized that full scholarships for Ph.D. students in these fields are rare. Many students work part-time jobs, which can delay their studies and career development. This scholarship aims to provide stable financial support, allowing students to focus on their research and graduate on time.
The fellowship is open to Taiwanese doctoral students enrolled in universities across the nation. Up to 15 students from the first to third year of the Ph.D program will be awarded fellowships. Recipients are expected to become candidates by the end of their third year. After that, they will be eligible for dissertation fellowships, which extend through the fifth year of the program.
This year, 237 applications were submitted, with 16 students selected. Recipients come from National Chengchi University, National Taiwan Normal University, National Taiwan University, and Tainan National University of the Arts.
