The volume has collected articles of various lengths written within the past two decades on seemingly disconnected topics spanning from the Song dynasty in the twelfth century to the late Qing period in the nineteenth century. These topics, however, shared the concern with boundary crossing and its related mechanisms. The volume is divided into three sections. Through the perspectives of “what is Yiyu (the foreign)” “the emergence of cross-boundary media and new frameworks,” and “selectivity and transformation”, they discuss how the history of Chinese art has been developed in various open and dynamic exchanges, as well as how these exchanges and boundary crossings have continuously reshaped frameworks and the landscape of the discipline.
