Helping plants make more cells during stress

Date: 2022-02-08

During drought stress, plants produce fewer cells. While this can be a good strategy to conserve water, it can also restrict biomass and yield of crops. Results published in Plant Cell by the laboratory of Dr. Paul Verslues at Institute of Plant and Microbial Biology, shows how altering key regulatory genes lets the plant maintain a larger population of dividing cells (larger meristem) during drought and thus maintain higher growth rate.
