The goal of this edited volume is to introduce the roles that popular customs and culture have played in Wenzhou’s social and cultural history. Our book is noteworthy for its interdisciplinary approach, with authors blending the use of historical documents with field research. The source materials presented in each chapter are highly diverse, including: 1) Library sources such as local gazetteers, newspapers and periodicals, and collections such as the Wenzhou wenxian congshu 溫州文獻叢書, Wenzhou wenshi ziliao 溫州文史資料, and Wenzhou jisu shiliao 溫州舊俗史料. 2) Archival sources, especially records of local temples and their property; 3) Ethnographic data, including materials collected during fieldwork (stele inscriptions, temple placards, old documents, etc.) as well as interviews with local elders.
