Pilot Guidelines for the Academia Sinica Scholar Award

Approved on August 30, 2023
Amended on April 9, 2024

  • The Academia Sinica Scholar Award (the Award) was established by Academia Sinica (AS) in accordance with its mission of “guiding, coordinating, and rewarding academic research.” It aims to elevate the overall academic research standards of Taiwan and to strengthen collaboration between AS and Taiwanese universities, by encouraging and rewarding original research initiatives carried out by full-time Associate Research Fellows or Associate Professors and above from AS and local universities. Awardees will be recognized as “Academia Sinica Scholars” during the Award project period, and those employed at universities will be jointly appointed to AS.
  • Applicant Eligibility:
    • Full-time Associate Research Fellows or Associate Professors and above from AS and local universities, under the age of 55 (as of December 31 of the application year).
    • External awardees are allowed to apply for renewal once, by submitting a project proposal within the same year that the previous grant expires.
    • Current grantees of individual large-scale research grants funded by the National Science and Technology Council are ineligible to apply if the overlap period of the said grant and the Award project exceeds three months. Refer to the annual funding opportunity announcement for the said grant types.
  • The Award is made on a referral basis. Applicants from local universities must be on a recommended list of up to five candidates submitted by their affiliated universities to AS. AS will recommend select candidates from its Investigator Project Grant applicants. Renewal applications do not require referrals from AS or the local universities. Refer to the annual funding opportunity announcement for detailed application procedures and required documents.
  • The Award supports individual research projects in the fields of physical and mathematical sciences, life sciences, and humanities and social sciences. Applicants are required to submit a project proposal based on their research expertise. The project period is five years.
  • The rights and obligations of external awardees during their joint appointment with AS will be determined by their appointing Institutes or Research Centers. Awardees will execute the projects at their affiliated universities, and an additional 10% of the approved total budget will be provided by AS to defray administrative expenses, but no supplemental allowance for the awardees.
  • Prior to commencing the Award project, the awardee, serving as the Principal Investigator (Project PI), is required to sign an execution agreement with AS. The regulations pertaining to Award project execution and assessment should be carried out in accordance with the content of this agreement.
  • In cases where the Project PI is found to be in violation of academic ethics or conflict of interest regulations, the “Code of Ethics for Academia Sinica Research Fellows and Research Specialists” shall apply.
