Abstract:
This talk examines the embassy sent to the Great Khan Guyuk in 1249 by King Louis IX of France (Saint Louis) while Louis was on his first crusade. One of the most remarkable moments of medieval Eurasian diplomacy, the embassy reveals the challenges and possibilities in the dialogue between Latin Christians and the Mongols.
