Abstract:
Cells operate at typical energy scales in the range 1-30 kT, and hence equilibrium and non-equilibrium are fundamentally intertwined. For instance, molecular motors utilize the fluctuating thermal background to do their work, but even the geometric structure of organelles, at the larger cellular mesoscale, reflects the interplay of order and disorder. I will look at a handful phenomena and models that illustrate this interplay.
