Upon major injuries, zebrafish can regenerate complex tissues with extreme accuracy. Despite this robustness, the mechanisms that ensure the just-right amount of tissue regrowth remain little understood. Here, we present evidence and propose that insights from the zebrafish tailfin model could instruct strategies to enable complex tissue regeneration in animals that are less regenerative, such as mice and humans.
