Introduction:
As highlighted by Siniša Malešević (2010) and Horng-Luen Wang et al. (2014), while war has always been a major force in shaping the social, contemporary sociology has not been sufficiently engaged with the topic. In 2023, the Institute of Sociology launched a workshop titled “The Russian Aggression on Ukraine One Year On: Its Social and Political Impact on Eastern Europe and East Asia.” In this second edition heading toward a collective publication, we will further explore how Eastern European and East Asian societies have been responding to challenges posed by war or the threat of war, and what insights do these comparative perspectives provide to the sociology of war. Moreover, against the dominance of international relations and political science in the debates on war, with extensive discussion of 'high politics'(national and international levels) but only shallow analysis of 'low politics'(the black box of the 'social'), we aim to reframe politics from an in-depth sociological perspective.
Remarks: This workshop will be conducted entirely in English; however, participants are welcome to pose questions in Mandarin. Lunch is provided. Submitting this registration form confirms your participation. A pre-meeting notice will be sent via email one week before the event.
