“Education and Power in Asia: A Historical and Transnational Perspective” International Academic Conference

Introduction:
Émile Durkheim, one of the great masters of French classical sociology, argues that school education plays a key role in the distribution of social power. To understand society, we must first understand school education. He also points out that a historical comparative method can help us explore the characteristics of the school systems and analyze the relationship between education and social power, making it the most potent tool for the sociology of education. However, historical comparative education research took root relatively late in Taiwan, and it has not yet enabled policymakers, the academia, and the general public to learn from other societies’ experiences and gain deeper insights into our society.
This conference aims to promote historical comparative education research in Taiwan. Scholars from Taiwan, Singapore, South Korea, the United States, Hong Kong and Mainland China are invited to share their research findings on colonial education, foreign student policies, elite schools, examination system reforms, curriculum and class inequality in these regions with the Taiwanese academic community. By juxtaposing the historical development of education in different societies, this conference contributes to a better understanding of Taiwan’s neighboring countries, and deepening our thinking on education in Taiwan, also as an important first step in promoting historical comparative studies of education in Asia.

Some articles will be presented in English, while others will be in Mandarin.
