Academician Yong-Yih Tseng Has Passed Away

Academician Yong-Yih Tseng passed away in Taipei on October 10, 2022. He was 81 years old.

Dr. Tseng was renowned for his contributions to the study of Chinese Literature, especially traditional drama, popular literature, and folk arts. After receiving his doctorate from the Department of Chinese Literature at National Taiwan University, he continued to teach there and was later honored as Professor Emeritus in 2004. Dr. Tseng authored a remarkable collection of writings, including over 30 scholarly books as well as creative works consisting of over 30 articles and drama scripts. His frequent visits and exchanges with the international academic community also made a significant impact in promoting research on traditional Taiwanese drama.

During his distinguished academic career, Dr. Tseng received numerous honors, including the 7th National Award for Arts, the Distinguished Research Award from the National Science Council (four times), the Chung Shan Literary Award, and the 52nd Ministry of Education Academic Award. Dr. Tseng’s creative works also earned high acclaim and many awards, including the Traditional Drama Program Award from the 43rd TV Broadcasting Golden Bell Awards (2008), the Best Lyrics Award from the 24th Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music (2013), and the Special Award from the 31st Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music (2020). In 2016, he was bestowed with the Order of Brilliant Star, Second Rank, by the ROC President for his contributions. Dr. Tseng was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2014.
