Guidelines for the Application of Funding for High-value Instruments at Academia Sinica (Pilot Program)
Approved on December 19, 2024
- These guidelines are established to effectively use instrument funds in Academia Sinica (hereinafter referred to as the "AS"), to exchange obsolete yet essential scientific instruments needed in key research areas with appropriate replacements, or obtain such instruments, thereby improving academic research and development in AS.
- The term "high-value instrument(s)" (hereinafter referred to as "instrument(s)") in these guidelines refers to those defined in the Guidelines for the Core Facilities and High-value Instrument Management Committee.
- Current research staff and research specialists (hereinafter referred to as "research staff") may submit proposals to their affiliated research units, and apply for funds with the recommendation of their affiliated research units. Research units may also initiate applications based on the need for strategic development in emerging fields. The research unit should designate current or incoming research staff as the primary individual in charge of the instrument.
- This funding is generally a one-time grant. However, if there is a special need, multi-year funding may be granted with justification.
- Applications must specify matching funds and the space in the research unit that will be allocated for the new instrument(s). Utilities, rent, operating and other expenses should also be included in the application along with administrative support.
Current or incoming research staff who have comprehensive knowledge and application of the instrument should be assigned to supervise its maintenance and effective use. - Eligible applicants must complete the application and submit it to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service, Academia Sinica for processing.
- The application for funding will be reviewed by the Central Academic Advisory Council (hereinafter referred to as "the Council "). If, during initial consideration, an application does not appear to be relevant to AS's academic development, it will not be accepted. Applications that are relevant to AS's academic development will be further reviewed by appropriate experts. The Council will conduct a final review, where the experts and applicants may be invited to attend. Results of the final review will be announced after approval by the President of AS.
- Funded instruments must be made available to interested users, either through paid services or collaborative research, after installation. The management of these instruments will follow the Guidelines for High-Value Instrument Use Management, Academia Sinica.
