  • Purpose
    To encourage young scholars to conduct in-depth research and make significant contributions, Academia Sinica (AS) offers awards to young scholars with original, internationally competitive and potentially influential research accomplishments. These Guidelines have been established to promote this end.
  • Number of Awardees
    • The Academia Sinica Early-Career Investigator Research Achievement Award (the Award) confers up to three awardees annually in each of the following Divisions: Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, and Humanities and Social Sciences. An additional awardee for interdisciplinary science may be added if necessary.
    • Each person may receive the award only once.
  • Eligibility
    Applicants with Ph.D. degrees and who meet the following requirements are eligible to apply:
    • Applicants with full-time positions as Assistant Research Fellows, Assistant Professors, or equivalent positions who have been employed for less than eight years (counting back from August 1 of the year the application is submitted). Applicants may defer the period for two years for each childbirth or parental leave.
    • Applicants must be employed full-time at a domestic academic research institution or domestic public or private university or college (postdoctoral positions not included).
  • Application Materials
    • Applicants should provide up to three representative publications published during their employment at a domestic institution during the past five years (excluding Ph.D. dissertations). Such publications may be written in any language. If the representative publications are extensions or adaptions of the applicant’s Ph.D. dissertation, the applicant should provide additional information describing the extended or adapted content and the novelty of the publication for the review committee to consider.
    • Applicants should provide a list of research publications during the past five years, as well as two letters of recommendation from scholars or experts of relevant fields.

    Representative publications and list of research publications should be within five years dating back from August 1 of the year the application is submitted.

  • Award
    • Each awardee will receive an award of NT$300,000, a research grant of NT$300,000, and a medal. Research grant funds should be used during a one-year period starting on January 1 of the year following the conferral of the award, and is restricted to the purposes of participation in overseas conferences by awardees or their post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, or Ph.D. students; employment of research assistants; purchase of equipment or other materials necessary for conducting research. If the research grant funds cannot be used within the one-year period, an application may be submitted to AS for a one-year extension.
    • To acknowledge the research achievements of the awardees and encourage outstanding scholarship, all medals will be presented during a public ceremony. A brief introduction of the awardees and the titles of their research publications will be posted on the AS website.
  • Application Submission
    Applicants should submit applications on the AS website during annual application periods.
  • Review Procedures
    • The Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Life Sciences and Humanities and Social Sciences will each establish a review committee, with 9–15 members of each committee appointed by the AS President.
    • After initial and secondary review, each review committee should compile a list of recommended candidates for its Division based on evaluations by experts from relevant fields within and outside of AS. After secondary review by each committee, candidates for interdisciplinary science may be introduced, with awardees for interdisciplinary science decided during the joint meeting.
    • The final list of awardees will be determined by a joint meeting of committee members appointed by the AS President.
  • Disbursal of Funds and Budget Verification
    Awardees should submit receipts for all award expenditures to AS for budget verification. For research grants, the awardee’s affiliated research institute (or center) should submit receipts for disbursal of funds as well as original documentation for each fiscal year to AS for budget verification.
  • Ethical Conduct
    In cases where an AS awardee or a non-AS awardee is found to be in violation of academic ethics or conflict of interest regulations, the Code of Ethics for Academia Sinica Research Fellows and Research Specialists will Specialists will apply.
