Chronic itch is an underappreciated health burden that impairs quality of life and imposes significant economic costs on society. The goal of my research program is to elucidate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying chronic itch and translate these insights into mechanism-based therapeutic strategies. Using integrated bioinformatic, cellular, and preclinical approaches, my work has identified oncostatin M (OSM) as a major cytokine driving inflammatory itch, revealed endogenous peptides (C10orf99) as previously unrecognized pruritogens acting through Mas-related G protein–coupled receptors (MRGPRs), and established a neuro–immune–stromal interactome in which reciprocal signaling among sensory neurons, immune cells, and stromal cells contributes chronic itch, pain and inflammation.
