Abstract
The Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism of spontaneous symmetry breaking is implemented within the Standard Model (SM) of Particle Physics. It gives masses to the electroweak gauge bosons and predicts the existence of one (and only one) physical scalar field. This Higgs boson has been observed
in 2012 at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, and its properties are consistent with the SM expectations. However, the intriguing question of whether there are more fundamental scalar bosons remains unanswered.
This is particularly puzzling since the scalar sector lies at the heart of the internal problems of the SM, and nearly all theories predict new Higgses.
In this talk, I review the Higgs mechanism in the SM, its properties and experimental signatures. After discussing why there are many good reasons we expect additional Higgs bosons, I will present recent analyses pointing towards the existence of new Higgs bosons within the reach of the LHC.
