Abstract:

Proton transfer in the electronic excited state can be a very fast process that can trigger various other dynamics to ultimately determine the fate of a molecule after absorbing a photon. The proton acts as a harpoon, either between parts of a molecule or between hydrogen bound molecules. We will show examples that demonstrate how this mechanism can govern photostability in ancient pigments and in the building blocks of life.
