Fractionalization, neutral Fermi surfaces, and emergent lattice gauge fields in many-body quantum systems
Abstract: Quantum many-body systems exhibit exotic phases of matter that possess properties distinct from those of their classical counterparts. One particularly unique property is fractionalization, in which many-body interactions give rise to excitations carrying fractional charges and exhibit anyonic statistics. During this talk, I will demonstrate that a Kondo lattice model can host an electronic insulating state with a fractionalized neutral Fermi surface. Additionally, I will present evidence of a new type of topological "fracton" order in 3+1 dimensions, which is characterized by immobile excitations and can be described by emergent lattice gauge theories in these quantum many-body systems.
