摘要：

This presentation explores how the responses of religious teachers and communities to the COVID-19 pandemic have influenced and facilitated the transmission of Tibetan Buddhism to Taiwan. It describes how ritual and mantra accumulation practices recommended in response to the COVID-19 pandemic introduced Taiwanese practitioners to a new deity, Parṇaśabarī (ལོ་མ་གྱོན་མ葉依佛母), who protects from epidemic disease. I argue that global crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can both serve as catalysts for religious change while also reinvigorating tradition as religious leaders draw upon specific narratives, practices, and histories to respond to contemporary circumstances.
