The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) announced its 2024 award winners. Three distinguished winners are from Taiwan in order of announcement: Dr. Yi-Fang Tsay, Distinguished Research Fellow of Institute of Molecular Biology, Academia Sinica; Dr. Jueinai Raynien Kwo, Tsing Hua Honorary Chair Professor and Professor of Department of Physics, National Tsing Hua University; Academician Fu-Chan Wei, Distinguished Chair Professor of College of Medicine, Chang Gung University.
Dr. Yi-Fang Tsay received TWAS Award in Biology Science. Dr. Tsay is recognized for her breakthrough research in the transport, signaling and utilization efficiency of nitrate, which transformed plant biology. Her research findings are regularly cited in fundamental textbooks on plant physiology, and informing strategies in application. Dr. Tsay received The Ministry of Education Academic Award, Taiwan Outstanding Women in Science Award, and was elected as international member, National Academy of Sciences, USA in 2021.
Academician Fu-Chan Wei received TWAS Award in Medical Science in recognition of his major contributions to the contemporary science and art of microsurgical body reconstructions which have saved countless cancer patients’ lives and helped restore dignity to the disabled victims suffering from trauma. Dr. Wei is currently the Distinguished Chair Professor at Chang Gung University and Chang Gung Medicine & Health.
Professor Jueinai Raynien Kwo received TWAS Award in Physics for her outstanding work in condensed matter research with the invention of novel thin films for magnetism, superconductivity, nanoelectronics and spintronics, especially for her pioneering work in the field of artificial magnetic superlattices. Prof. Kwo is National Chair of the Ministry of Education, Fellow of American Physical Society, and Academician of the Asian Pacific Academy of Materials. She has received Taiwan Outstanding Women Prize in Materials Science from Wu Chien-Shiung Education Foundation, and Magnetic Technology Medal of Taiwan Association for Magnetic Technology.
