Academician Tso-Ping Ma passed away in the United States on April 6, 2021. He was 75 years old.
A pioneering figure in semiconductor device physics and technology, Dr. Ma made significant contributions to Taiwan's semiconductor and electronics industries. After receiving his Ph.D. at Yale University in 1974, Dr. Ma did research at IBM before joining the Yale faculty in 1977. He served as Chairman of the Electrical Engineering Department twice, devoting unstinting efforts to cultivating young talent.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Ma received numerous honors, including being elected a Member of the National Academy of Engineering (USA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He also received the 2005 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award and the 2008 Connecticut Medal of Technology. Dr. Ma was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2012.
