Academician Yu-Pen Su Elected as an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) announced its 2024 list of new members on February 6th. Academia Sinica Academician Yu-Pen Su has been elected as an International Member of the  NAE, in recognition of his contributions to the development of aerospace propulsion and vehicle technologies for missiles and rockets.

Dr. Su's expertise spans aerospace propulsion, power, and systems engineering. He has led important national projects, such as Tianxing (天星) and Tianqing (天擎), focusing on the research and development of solid rocket engines, liquid ramjet engines, liquid rocket engines, turbofan jet engines, and other technologies. He has played a crucial role in mechanical and electrical development of rocket technology as well as systems integration. Dr. Su's contributions have laid the foundation for the development of missile systems, such as Sky Bow I(天弓一型), Hsiung Feng III(雄三), Hsiung Feng II(雄二), and Wan Jian(萬劍), promoting the development of hypersonic cruise vehicles, and enhancing the country's military capabilities involving cutting-edge technology.

Dr. Su has served for many years at the Missile and Rocket Systems Research Division, National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology, holding positions from researcher, deputy director, to director. He currently serves as a consultant to the institute. In 2022, Dr. Su was recognized as an exemplary public servant and received the Outstanding Contribution Award for Model Civil Servants. In the same year, he was also awarded A-Second Class Medal of the Ministry of National Defense, and was elected Academia Sinica Academician.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional honors that can be bestowed upon an engineer. The membership honors scholars with outstanding contributions to engineering research, practice, or education, and to the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology. In 2024, NAE elected 114 members and 21 international members from academia and industry.. There are now 2,310 U.S. members and 332 international members.
