Date: 2021-04-27

On April 26, 2021, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) announced its newly elected 120 Members and 30 International Members, with Dr. Yi-Fang Tsay, Distinguished Research Fellow at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Molecular Biology, being elected as a new International Members for her outstanding achievements in plant science. Dr. Tsay expressed surprise upon hearing the news, considering herself deeply honored to have her low-key research efforts in Taiwan recognized by the international scholarly community. A scholar consistently devoted to contributions and breakthroughs in her field of study, Dr. Tsay encourages everyone to persist in the pursuit of their true interests.

Dr. Tsay is a globally renowned plant scientist specializing in plant molecular biology. Her research interests focus on nitrate transport, signaling, and nitrogen use efficiency. In addition to discovering the first nitrate transporters in plants, Dr. Tsay updated the theory of nitrate transport in textbooks and discovered a novel mechanism for nutrition sensing in plants. In addition, Dr. Tsay found applications for basic research by improving nitrogen use efficiency in crops and eliminating environmental damage, which provided a new strategy for sustainable agriculture.

The NAS was established in 1863 by a charter passed by Congress and signed by President Abraham Lincoln. It is a prestigious, non-profit academic organization with a global impact on scholarship that provides independent and objective advice in the fields of health, education, welfare and science. At present, the NAS has 2,461 Members and 511 International Members.
