CLEC5A and TLR2 are critical in SARS-CoV-2 induced NET formation and lung inflammation

Date: 2022-09-14

Recent studies indicate that high levels of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) were detected in COVID-19 patients’ serum and organs. NETs contribute to immunothrombosis, thereby leading to extensive intravascular coagulopathy and multiple organ dysfunctions. A team led by Dr. Shie-Liang Hsieh at the Genomics Research Center, Academia Sinica reported that high level of platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PLT-EVs) was found in COVID-19 patients, and PLT-EVs contribute to severe immunothrombosis via CLEC5A and TLR2. Thus, blockade of CLEC5A and TLR2 is a novel strategy to prevent SARS-CoV2-induced immunothrombosis.
