Abstract
The research group led by Dr. Chi-Kuang Yao investigates the molecular mechanisms governing synaptic transmission, neuron-glia communication, and their relevance to neurological disorders. Building on this foundation, a major current focus of Dr. Yao's group is the discovery that ER-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) mediate transcellular transfer of ER components, particularly the ER-shaping protein Reticulon, from neurons to glia. This transfer, regulated by neuronal activity and autophagy, maintains ER homeostasis across neurons and glia. Disruption of this pathway impairs glial ER morphology and neural circuit function, highlighting a novel intercellular mechanism essential for nervous system integrity.
