• General Provisions
  • This Regulation is enacted in accordance with Article 9 of the Organization Act of Academia Sinica.
  • The Honorary Academician possesses life tenure with emeritus, duties are as follows:
    
    • To promote domestic and international academic cooperation and correspondence.
    • To direct, assist, and develop the academic research profile of Academia Sinica.
  • Honorary Academicians are elected every two years at the Convocation of Academicians. Honorary Academicians are divided according to the four divisions of Academia Sinica: Mathematics and Physical Sciences; Engineering Sciences; Life Sciences; and Humanities and Social Sciences. Each division is permitted no more than 3 new Academicians (12 for all divisions in total) to be elected at each convocation. This total does not include the special provisions stipulated in Article 9 herein below.
  • The preparatory work for the election of the Honorary Academicians is administered by the Academicians’ Election Committee (hereafter referred to as AEC).
• Nomination Procedures
  • The election of an Honorary Academician requires the nomination of 10 Academicians of Academia Sinica, and at least 5 of the nominators must belong to the same division of Academia Sinica as the nominee.
  • The nomination form of the Honorary Academician must be completed and should be sent via registered mail along with the nominee’s full publication list and other specified documents.
• Qualification Review of Candidates
  • The AEC will review the qualifications of each nominee following the nomination deadline. Qualified nominees will be included in a preliminary list. The AEC will work with divisional experts to assess the nominee’s academic contributions to his (her) field. Any resulting recommendations will be submitted to the Convocation of Academicians along with relevant documents.
• Election Procedures
  • The merits of each candidate from the candidates-list are discussed at length at the Convocation of Academicians before votes are cast. Academicians of Academia Sinica unable to attend the Convocation of Academicians may cast their votes by correspondent via registered mail. A candidate is elected Honorary Academician according to the following criteria: the candidate receives over half of all votes of all divisions of Academia Sinica represented at the vote; and the candidate receives a majority of at least two-thirds of all votes of his (her) own division; with the proviso that at least half of Academicians of the candidate’s division cast a vote.
  • Candidates who possess the Nobel Prize or other distinguished global academic awards may bypass the customary review procedures (Articles 7 and 8) and proceed directly to the Convocation of Academicians vote. Exceptional candidates require the votes of over half of all Academicians of Academia Sinica to be elected Honorary Academician. All global distinguished awards, prizes and qualifications require validation according to the standards established by the General Assembly of Academia Sinica.
  • The results will be announced following the vote. The AEC will provide an explanation for its decision in each case.
• Supplementary Provisions
  • Amendments and changes to this Regulation may be made in accordance with Articles 14 and 15 of the Regulation for the Election of Academicians of Academia Sinica.
