[IAMS Seminar] Neutral-Atom Based Quantum Computing with 171Yb Nuclear-Spin Qubits

Abstract: Neutral atom platforms for quantum computing rely on Rydberg excitation for the implementation of two- or multi-qubit gates, and all-to-all connectivity via a dedicated interaction-zone and atom rearrangement. In this talk, I will present our progress towards a highly scalable neutral-atom quantum computer based on the alkaline-earth-like atom ytterbium. This species provides a natural nuclear spin qubit amenable to long coherence times, as well as narrow and ultra-narrow optical transitions that provide opportunities for state- and site-selective imaging and high-fidelity gate operations.

Bio: Dr. Cheng-An Chen received his Ph.D. in physics from Purdue University in 2021, and his thesis work was focused on nonequilibrium two-dimensional cesium quantum gases. Prior to his Ph.D., Dr. Chen completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in physics at National Taiwan University in 2008 and 2010, respectively. From 2011 to 2015, he served as a research assistant in Dr. Yu-Ju Lin's group at IAMS, Academia Sinica. Currently, Dr. Chen is a senior quantum engineer at Atom Computing, where he works on developing neutral-atom quantum computers using ytterbium atoms in tweezer arrays.
