Rodents use odors to navigate and forage for valuable resources. To support these flexible behaviors, the brain dynamically integrates odor information with an internal model of the spatial environment. I am interested in how interconnected circuits for odor representation and spatial cognition interact to generate such behaviors. I will discuss my previous work on circuits and population dynamics in primary olfactory (piriform) cortex demonstrating that it is an excellent site to understand computations and organizing principles for sensory cognitive integration and behavioral flexibility. I will also discuss my current work at Allen Institute for Neural Dynamics where we use olfactory foraging behaviors of head-fixed mice in virtual reality to understand brain-wide circuits for flexible decision making.
