Guidelines for the Scholarly Monograph Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Academia Sinica

  • Purpose
    The “Scholarly Monograph Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences” (below abbreviated as Monograph Award) has been established to implement Academia Sinica’s legal mandate of rewarding academic research, as well as to encourage scholars in the humanities and social sciences to publish monographs, conduct in-depth research on academic topics and make important contributions to scholarship.
  • Award Description
    • Each year, a maximum of five monographs are awarded the Monograph Award by Academia Sinica. Scholars receiving the Monograph Award (below referred to as awardees) will obtain 600,000 New Taiwan Dollars and a medal.
    • In order to acknowledge the research achievements of the awardee(s), the Monograph Award medals will be conferred by Academia Sinica at a public ceremony. A short biography of the awardee(s) as well as the title and abstract of the awarded monograph will be publicized on Academia Sinica’s webpage
  • Eligibility Requirements
    Applicants for the Monograph Award must hold full-time positions at domestic academic research institutions or at public or private universities or colleges. Applicants must have been engaged in teaching or research in the humanities or social sciences for at least two full years.
    Retirees meeting the aforementioned requirements are also eligible to apply.
    In the case of multiple authors for a monograph, at least one main author should meet the eligibility requirements.
  • Application Documents
    • Works submitted for the Monograph Award shall be first editions of scholarly monographs published within three years prior to the announcement date. (Acceptable works do not include textbooks, compiled and translated works, symposium papers and conference proceedings, reports of research achievements, scholarly monographs which have not yet undergone official review procedures.) Submitted monographs may be written in languages other than Chinese.
    • Applicants should provide three copies of their monograph, curriculum vitae, and a list of scholarly works published within 5 years of the application deadline
    • In the case of multiple authors for a monograph, all authors should jointly apply for the Monograph Award. However, the total amount awarded to all applicants for the same monograph is restricted to the amount established in Article 2 (a) of these Guidelines.
  • How to Apply
    Announcements will be made in early January of each year inviting applicants to submit their online applications to Academia Sinica between March 1 and March 31 of that year. Three paper copies of the monograph shall be submitted to the Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service.
  • Evaluation Procedures
    • The President of Academia Sinica shall appoint 5 to 9 committee members to form an Evaluation and Selection Committee.
    • The Evaluation and Selection Committee will conduct preliminary and secondary reviews of all applications based on the reviews of experts in related fields. The Committee will then draft a list of monographs receiving the Monograph Award.
  • Ethical Conduct
    Should an awardee of the Award be involved in academic ethics violations, her or his case will be processed according to the “Guidelines for the Establishment and Operation of Ethics Committees at All Levels, Academia Sinica.
  • Promulgation
    These Guidelines and the amendments thereof shall be passed by the General Assembly of Academia Sinica and shall take effect after approval by the President of Academia Sinica.
