2nd-Year : "Taiwan Memory -- Digital Photo Museum"
Under the cooperation of Folkloric Arts Center, Technology Art Center of National Institute of Arts, Institute of Information Science, Computing Center of Academia Sinica, we have accomplished the first year's plan for the project "Taiwan Memory-Digital Photo Museum":
I." The Study and Analysis of Taiwan Historical Photos" by Folkloric Arts Center of NIA.The works finished include:
- The writing of the content of "Taiwan Sketch", one of the main theme shows on the web;
- the processing of the data and the provision of "Taiwan Tour" GIS theme photos;
- the field analysis of " Database index" for photos;
- the confirmation of database index items;
- the data input under the categories - "military" and "law";
- the input of main exhibition photos,
- the writing of the" Examine Taiwan with a Magnifier" in the "Interactive Learning Section."
II. "The Design and Study of Interactive Information Visualization of Taiwan Memory Digital Museum" by Technology Arts Center of NIA In Year 1, we learned from the analysis and organization of historical photographs from Part 1, from the GIS work from Part 3, and database work from Part 4. We used this knowledge to build an interactive digital museum. The museum features sections called Taiwan Sketch, Taiwan Tour, Taiwan Recall, and Interactive Learning. Our digital museum is directed to both scholars (with a database for searching Taiwan historical photographs) and the general public (to exercise distance learning about the history, geography, art, and culture of Taiwan in old age.)
III. " Design and Implementation of Retrieval, Browsing and Data Mining Mechanisms" by Institute of Information Science of Academia Sinica,In the first year of this project, we have completed the required functionalities for basic retrieval, browsing and data management. This includes a full-text search retrieval engine, an advanced search engine so that users can provide complex search conditions, and programs that support story line browsing for "Taiwan Sketch" and support GIS search for "Taiwan Tour".
IV. "Design and Implementation of Storage, Management and GIS Mechanisms for Digital Photo Museum" by Computing Center of Academia Sinica.This project was not admitted last year, but we have completed the analysis and establishment of metadata for objects, GIS application, and integration of GIS and metadata.
For the second year, we have changed the titles for the four sub-plans. The titles and their content are as follows:
I.The Analysis of Photos in "Taiwan Memory-Digital Photo Museum" from Cultural and Historical Views by Folkloric Arts Center of NIA.In the second year, we'll focus on:
- Giving sub-topics for each of the existing 12 categories.
- Finishing material key-in and the analysis of photos under the categories Law,Art, Culture, Custom, Aborigine and Others ( 5 topics of the existing 12 categories):
- Providing more background information for each of the photos displayed.
- Designing new themes for " Interactive learning section"
II. The Design and Study of Interactive Information Visualization of Taiwan Memory - Digital Photo Museum by Technology Arts Center of NIA In year two, we will continue building these sections:
- Taiwan Sketch will classify photographs by topics of culture, art, and custom.
- Taiwan Recall will use allow database retrieval using Part 3's data mining analysis.
- Taiwan Tour will use the GIS technology developed in Part and we will use a historical map of Taiwan as our central motif for the interface.
- Interactive Learning and our information visualization is the focus of Year 2. We will build new features including e-Learning - Imaging Taiwan History, Historical Photo Album, and Taiwan Tour (new contributions). Technically, the Digital Museum will use technologies including mark-up languages (HTML and XML), Java, Javascript, and PHP. Interactive displays will be supported with Java, DHTML, Flash, and streaming video and audio. We will make information readable, interactive, alive, and interesting by presenting attractive visualizations for geography, historical dates, etc.
III. Design and Implementation of Personalized Browsing and Data Mining for "Taiwan Memory-Digital Photo Museum" by Institute of Information Science of Academia Sinica.This year's goals are to
- Enhance existing interface for user retrieval and browsing.
- Add a new "Old Photo Album" function that allows users to organize the photos they found in the Photo Museum.Establish usage log file database.
- Use Data Mining techniques: Mining relationships between photos and between photo collections from meta data, log files and photo albums.
- Use data mining results to enable the retrieval interface to dynamically recommend related photos to users.
- Use data mining results to complete "Reflection of Taiwan".
IV. "Design and Implementation of Storage, Management and GIS Mechanisms for Digital Photo Museum" by Computing Center of Academia Sinica.The objectives fot the second year include:
- Enhancing the integration of GIS and metadata, also offering one GUI-based retrieval and representation function.
- Achieving directional retrieval function between GIS and full-text database.
- Completing the analysis of metadata for persons and events.
- Setting up a three-dimensional axis of time, space and knowledge structure of content to be beneficial for knowledge discovery.
- Representing diverse topic for digital museum and e-learning in Internet on a GIS and metadata basis.
