It corresponds in part to Nippon Zenkoku Shoshi (shuukanban). Updated weekly with some 1300 records, it is accessible online via University of Tsukuba's Science Information Processing Center and National Diet Library's Library Automation Systems. It is also available on CD-ROM.
The JMARC was developed by the National Diet Library and the National Bibliography Agency in 1971. It began its data inputting in January 1977, and distribution of the database with the first week's issue in April 1981 of Japan National Bibliography Weekly List no. 13. The chief characteristics of JMARC lie in the following aspects: 1/ the bibliographic record format of magnetic tape was based on ISO 2709; 2/ the arrangement and structure of various elements of magnetic tape are in accordance with UNIMARC; 3/ the format structure comprises of record label, directory and bibliographic data; 4/ the character set consists of EBCDIC or JIS C6220; Chinese character code is JIS C6226; Chinese character code control is JIS C6225; a reverse area is set aside for character codes other than JIS C6226.
